It was a bitter sweet feeling, heading to Barbados, marking the end of our trip of a lifetime – three months of megamooning that we really didn’t want to end. Equally, we were excited to explore Barbados and see family.
We’d booked an AirBnB in the Hastings area, which came with stunnnig views over the sea. I think we spent every evening with the balcony doors open watching the sun going down over the Carribean sea (Mount Gay rum in hand). The apartment also came with whistling frogs, which lived directly outside Liz’s Mum and Dads room. All over the island they couldn’t be seen but could definitely be heard!
We spent most of our time walking and relaxing on the beach, snorkelling in the sea and soaking up the warmth. We ate some memorable dinners – the fish marinaded in Carribean spices was unbeatable.
One evening we took the bus to the famous Ostins Fish Fry. The bus was great fun – I think we fit in with the locals pretty well.
The next day, a spot of scuba diving. Having built up our confidence diving in Australia, we did a wreck dive, swimming into a sunken ship and through some very tight spaces. This was a new and rather scary experience for both of us. The marine life was completely different to what we’d seen before – less coral and different kinds of fish. Liz’s mum popped along too and went snorkelling.
Hiring a car, we explored other parts of the island. First stop was Hunte’s Gardens, based in a sink hole and run by an eccentric British-Bajan gardener who makes a mean rum punch.
Chris and three very jolly passengers then headed over to see Bathsheba, on the rugged east cost of the island for a bit of a wander.
The next day we visited Sunbury plantation, learning about the not-so-distant British colonial Barbados. Afterwards we travelled to the South Coast for a dip in the sea, passing some amazing colourful boats converted into houses!
Barbados we the best Megamoon ending we could have asked for. Although we both felt we could have extended our trip just a little bit more – we ended on a real high and with lifelong memories.
